ANGELA WILSON
Acrylic Painting
About the Artist (click to expand ↓ )
Angela has always had a clear vision of herself as a painter. She began painting alongside her grandmother, an accomplished oil and watercolour artist, and has always dabbled in paint and creative arts as a pastime. Once retired from a career in education, she indulged her love of learning and painting by attending numerous courses, workshops and retreats with talented artists and tutors.
She has developed a preference for painting waterscapes, as she has a strong connection to her subject matter. She cites her personal challenge as "capturing the light and reflections on water at various times of the day; using a range of colours and layers of paint, endeavouring to transpose what she sees onto a canvas for others to enjoy". She says, "To gaze at the changing light and colours of an ocean or waterway is the inspiration for her artist soul."
Her painting style has developed from experimenting with the vibrant and translucent colours of acrylic paints and inks and is now her preferred medium. She has moved from a more realistic, traditional style through using paint techniques and a palette knife to achieve a less exact and more impressionistic result. This allows more scope for interpretation by the viewer.
Her paintings are linked by subject: oceans, rivers, lakes, boats and shipwrecks. Some are painted on old wood boards or linen using the colour and texture to accentuate the sand, wood and rust. Others are studies of light and reflections in varying settings in changing light. Use of resins and mixed medium to achieve watery effects are also being used.
Art Inspiration
She cites her influences as the great impressionists, such as Turner and Monet. She also admires the work of contemporary marine artists; Jane James, Ken Knight, Josef Kote and Scott Nainsmith to name a few.

The lotus flowers emerge from the shallows of the lake. Soft leaves waft in the breezes across the water. As the light recedes the flowers fold and bow as if at rest for the night, creating a luminous glow across the dark waters. Exposing the linen gives this painting the impression of reflecting and fading light patches on the lake.

There is a fluorescent shine on the water lilies in the shafts of bright moonlight over the dark lagoon. The water provides a magical contrast in the last of the evening light. This effect was achieved by exposing some linen and use of iridescent pearl paint.

Exposed linen forms the trunk and branches of this spectacular paperbark tree. Camella quinquennial is a tree native to Australia and grows very tall in the swampy tidal areas along the riverbanks. This tree towers over many others, and in this season is brown and shabby compared to the abundance of creamy white flower spikes in summer.

A brushfire raged for many weeks in the National Park along the Burrum River. It was amazing to see the row of tall gums along the ridge above the banks standing tall and untouched while all the vegetation was burned behind them. The effects of fire in this painting was achieved with the palette knife and vibrant acrylic colours.
* This painting can be viewed at the Woodgate Tavern
